A Rich History and Vibrant Community
Bryn Mawr means big hill in Welsh. The name comes from an estate near Dolgellau in Wales that belonged to Rowland Ellis, a Quaker who emigrated to Pennsylvania in 1686. The town itself was called Humphreysville until 1869, when the Pennsylvania Railroad built its Main Line through here and a railroad agent named William H. Wilson renamed it after Ellis's estate.
That is worth pausing on, because it is the Main Line's origin story in one sentence. These towns were named and shaped by a railroad company selling the idea of living west of the city. Bryn Mawr got the Welsh name, the station, and eventually the institutions.
The institutions arrived quickly. Bryn Mawr College was founded in 1885 and Bryn Mawr Hospital in 1893. The Baldwin School occupies an 1889 hotel designed by Frank Furness. For a business owner, that history is not decoration. It is why a community this size supports the range of businesses it does.
Neighborhoods and Streets
Bryn Mawr does not sit inside one municipality. It is centered in Delaware County and reaches into Lower Merion Township in Montgomery County, along with parts of Haverford Township and Radnor Township. Everything runs off Lancaster Avenue, which is also U.S. Route 30. The commercial strip sits along it, and so does the film institute, the shops and most of the street level business.
